What Does Procurement Really Do? Communicating Impact & Value Through Storytelling
If you had to tell the story of procurement—what it is and why it matters—how would you begin?
When procurement works, communities thrive. Procurement is an engine that powers communities with procurement teams providing the fuel. Every day, through procurement, governments deliver high-impact services and value to residents. However, do residents or even other government stakeholders know what is happening behind the scenes?
Public procurement is often viewed as complex and burdensome, yet its role is not always fully appreciated. Through proactive storytelling, governments can demystify the procurement process and humanize the procurement function, creating a compelling case for why procurement matters to the public good.
The Procurement Excellence Network team hosted a 90-minute interactive session to support procurement teams in crafting compelling narratives that highlight procurement’s impact and shape how key stakeholders understand their work! The session focused on the following themes:
- Why Stories Matter: In what ways can storytelling shape the public’s perception and understanding of the procurement process?
- The “U” in Procurement: How can you talk about your own work and role in procurement in an accessible and engaging way?
- Communicating “Wins”: What strategies can procurement teams use to communicate what they do and how their work directly shapes local communities?
Every government and procurement professional has an impactful procurement story to tell—and should be empowered to share it!
